This month in the newsletter, we are exploring the concept of intuitive eating.
Practicing intuitive eating means listening to your body’s cues and letting them dictate what, when, and how much you eat. I know it seems very simple – because it actually IS simple.
But if you’re a woman in midlife, there’s a good chance you never learned how to take internal cues from your body…or have forgotten how to listen to your body. Instead, most of us rely on our environment for our cues:
- Wake up = eat breakfast whether you’re hungry or not.
- Stressful day = eat sugar or just overeat to feel better when it actually makes you feel worse.
- Constant daily mental chatter, “Eat fat, not cabs! Eat protein, not fat! Eat plants, not animals! Eat animals, not plants!”
When you rely solely on “what’s out there” or eat on auto-pilot without checking within for guidance, it leads to an endless cycle of guilt and disappointment, feelings of being disconnected from yourself, and deprivation of your senses!
I’m here today to remind you that your body was perfectly designed to give you all of the answers for what, how, when, & how often to eat. Intuitive eating brings to the locus of control back to yourself.
As women, I think we underestimate just how often we give our power away to ideas outside of ourselves. The subliminal message to ‘eat this, not that,’ is that if left to our own devices we will overeat, make bad choices, and get unhealthy or even sick.
I’m here today to remind you that’ just like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz had her ruby slippers, to get back HOME to HERSELF…YOU already possess the internal wisdom to figure out exactly how to eat in a way that is right for you.
Intuitive eating means that you take FULL responsibility for your health because you believe in your internal wisdom.
—> It means eating when you’re actually hungry, and stopping when you are comfortably full.
—> It means taking the time to check in with yourself after eating & self-assessing whether those foods made you feel energized and healthy vs. bloated and tired.
The truth is that we are all born with an individual genetic code that determines a unique prescription for foods that are right for you. Your body is always sending you feedback about how it wants you to eat:
Good feedback signals: energy, good mood, good sleep, clear thinking, and feeling of satiety.
Negative feedback signals: headaches, bloating, cramping, gas, foggy thinking, constant hunger, low blood sugar & cravings.
Intuitive eating is a process that results in embracing the eating behaviors that give you positive feedback and investigating the negative feedback to discover what & why eating behaviors may give you trouble.
Intuitive eating is a relearning process which in many ways asks us to start over. But it’s also one that brings along a LOT of freedom & one that cultivates a deeper relationship with yourself…one based on trust, reverence, & and deep respect.
So … how do you get started?
Easy! Start with this…wait for your body to TELL you it’s hungry…and then enjoy your food until your body tells you it’s full.
Eat when you’re physically HUNGRY…not because you’re bored, stressed, thirsty, it’s 6:30 pm, or because people around you are eating.
**Also notice if certain food causes you to get a drop in blood sugar just a few hours after eating, causing intense hunger and cravings for sweet or salty foods. That is negative feedback.
Over the next couple of weeks, I’m going to share some powerful tips to help you be successful tapping into YOUR body’s signals for how to intuitively eat.
This could be COMPLETELY LIFE-CHANGING if you try it! 🙂
